When I heard that Ghetto Mullet had released a new EP I couldn't wait to give it a listen, their last EP 'Sunday Morning Hangover' intrigued me. There was a really mellow, chilled feel to the last EP and anyone who likes Hip Hop-style beats all mixed up in a glitch-style salad sitting nicely alongside your Sunday morning cup of tea would have been comfortable with this.
So what of 'Unearthly Hours'? First of all, I like the title, Ghetto Mullet give us a feel of what making music means to them; late nights, red eyes, blank faces staring at a computer screen at 1am, and that's probably when they begin a session!!! This EP for me is in 2 parts, yet with those two parts, I believe, purposely mixed up. There are 2 up-tempo tracks and 2 down-tempo tracks, and they have been placed alternately as if Ghetto Mullet are making you aware of either a transition in their sound or the fact that their bows are strung in many ways. There's a moody feel to the EP, lots of punchy hard beats, some synthy sticky baselines , there are swirls and sounds, stabs and hits that jostle with squeaks and glitches, there's some fresh cutting in there too, showing their Hip Hop roots and an unexpected dash of funkiness at times! All this comes together to make a sound that will make you bob your head and look on the internet for more of their stuff!
Tachycardia, track 1 is a track from the heart! Literally, you can hear defibrillators in there, heart beats, heart monitor sounds, a women saying 'breathe' and a doctor (I imagine) saying 'shocking'. The beats are heavy and the base is hard and there are some thick chiming key sounds, you may read this and ask why? The answer to that would be 'why not?' Track 2, Depth Charge is up-tempo with constant drum hits flying at you with some squeaky submarine obviously at war with a spaceman (or at least that's what the video for this track suggests!). There are backwards snares and interference sounds that clue this in place. Redemption or Consumption returns to a slower grove and builds up and cools down around some neat scratching.
There's a definite message in this track that penetrates your subconscious over the plodding rhythm. The final track, Reboot, is a lift in tempo and has some moments of dark base next to some broken beats and a few well timed funky keys that glitch right out into oblivion! Be warned, there is a crazed android locked into the musical fibres of this track that wants nothing more than to reboot EVERYTHING!
To conclude, Ghetto Mullet are a must if you like Hip Hop Electronic instrumental sounds. I think we can only expect good things from them, one thing's for sure; their first EP was no fluke or stroke of luck, the sound is consistent and also consistently different and progressive to hold your interest.
